Dr. Neal Ranen, M.D., a leading Psychiatrist, cares for patients in the Baltimore area.

With over 25 years of experience in psychiatric evaluation and treatment, Dr. Ranen works to bring a high level of care to each of his patients. By fostering a culture of respect, compassion, and collaboration with all patients, he specializes in individualized outpatient treatment. Using his expertise in Psychopharmacology, he leverages modern medicine to promote mental health and wellness.

A Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Board-Certified), Dr. Ranen has a passion for private practice and is a full-time faculty member of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his training at John Hopkins and was full-time attending physician at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Additionally, he served as Director of Neuropsychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University (Sidney Kimmel Medical College) in Philadelphia. He also has published and regularly lectures on psychiatry-related topics.

As a Psychopharmacologist and Psychotherapist, Dr. Ranen believes that the basis of quality care includes careful listening and a vigilant, collective exploration of issues. Focused on his commitment to servicing patients through solid communication and the most up-to-date information, Dr. Ranen carefully considers the proper therapeutic approach for each patient as an individual. Medication Management

An integral component of mental health and wellness, medication management is one of the principal services offered by Dr. Ranen. He works carefully to find the ideal medications and proper dosages to assist his patients. Finding the right targeted medication (often combined with other elements of a treatment plan) has helped Dr. Ranen’s patients find balance.

Evaluation

Proper patient evaluation and assessment are key. Factors carefully evaluated include, but are not limited to, current problems, past problems, symptom inventory, past and current stressors, possible contributing factors, interpersonal stress/conflicts, family history, and medical history. As appropriate, Dr. Ranen provides an assessment of psychological and cognitive domains, assessment for any specific psychiatric diagnosis, assessment for any possible chemical imbalance, psychological and cognitive testing, laboratory tests, and assessment for treatment method.

Genetic Testing

Consistent with his commitment to utilizing the most up-to-date approaches, Dr. Ranen offers Genetic Testing. The tests, which screen multiple genes, provide information regarding how an individual may respond to specific medication options.

Counseling (Psychotherapy)

To create a customized treatment plan, Dr. Ranen employs a variety of counseling and psychotherapy forms. This may include, but is not limited to, supportive or practical/problem-solving approaches for coping, cognitive-behavioral therapy, exploration of past issues/events and their current impacts, and/or interpersonal therapy.

Dr. Ranen is focused on the values of expertise, compassion, and confidentiality by creating a personalized approach for each patient. Utilizing his expertise in medication and talk therapy, he is completely dedicated to the wellness of his patients.

The initial evaluation session will be customized to the patient’s needs. Dr. Ranen will review the issues and challenges faced and begin to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. The treatment plan may include a combination of approaches, such as targeted medication and individual, group, or specialized therapy. Follow-up therapy sessions are approximately one hour; follow-up medication visits are approximately half an hour.
